There is research that suggests that PCOS is more widespread among lesbian women than in heterosexual women. The research hypothesizes "that hyper-androgenism, which is associated with PCOS, may be one of the factors contributing to the sexual orientation of women." The article states that "the hormonal and biochemical imbalances associated with PCOS, such as elevated testosterone levels or decreased sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) may contribute to the sexual orientation of women who are attracted to other women." The research concludes with the fact that PCOS prevalence is twice as great for lesbian women. This poses the need for further research into why lesbian women may be more prone to PCOS.
